Salt Cay dining make people remember this
For an island of little resources from water shortages and spotty telephony you will find dining and drinking on Salt Cay an uncondensed wonder. Travel through the tastes of Salt Cay from local island dishes such as 'peas & rice', 'steam fish' and 'crack conch', to sophisticated presentations of 'almond encrusted snapper' and 'bananas foster'. When the water runs out, you will still find plenty to drink from Heineken, the favorite island beer, to rum punch and the nefarious 'wolf' and 'monkey', backed by official island legend ....just ask. If this is the nerve center of Salt Cay, then its ebullient owner, Porter Williams, is its commander. The Island Thyme is more than just a good place to eat -- it's the local bank, the Internet access center, and party central. Where else can you sip a cool Cuba Libre while cheering on a hermit crab race? Where else can you dine out on seared rare sirloin and grilled lobster, smoke a fine Cuban cigar, and then walk home in your bare feet? Porter Williams brings together the widely disparate passions of his life in this delightful restaurant, and visitors are the better for it. Island Thyme is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has a lively bar scene -- ask about the Wolf shooter, but sign over everything you own to a trusted family member before partaking. At night, sample such delicacies as coconut shrimp, almond-crusted snapper, duck breast, or even sushi. See you at Wednesday Wing Night! Pat Simmons is a retired schoolteacher (she taught for 28 years in the Salt Cay school system) who now runs this modest eatery out of her home, on a latticed screened-in patio with yellow walls, green trim, and bright-colored tablecloths. Call ahead to say you're coming, give Pat your order, and when you arrive, you'll be treated to delicious island food served family-style. Choose from steamed or fried fish, curry conch, barbecued chicken, peas and rice, greens, and more. Beer and wine are available. Nonguests can reserve a gourmet dinner at the Windmills Plantation. The prix-fixe meals include soup, appetizer, entree, and dessert ($60 per person, drinks extra; reservations required).
