Salt Cay history

Salt Cay history overview

Salt Cay history strats with the nautical discoveries of Christopher Columbus in the 1490s and the decision of Spain to establish a landed empire in the Caribbean after 1502.

For Salt Cay history these events initiated a process that is still ongoing in the area.

Two generations more than sixty-six per cent of the people living in the newly-created Spanish towns as well as in Salt Cay were mixtures between the conquering Spanish and African invaders and the subject populations.

Mixing of any sort remains a notable Salt Cay history characteristic.

Salt Cay history - learn what once happend

Salt Cay boasts the smallest population of the Turks and Caicos Islands. For those who wish to relax and unwind on the friendliest place on earth, Salt Cay is the best choice one could make. Known as the island time forgot, visitors will enjoy the 18th and 19th century Bermudan-style architecture of the historic salt industry buildings, windmills from days past, and the quiet salt paved streets. Salt Cay, one of the three salt producing islands in the country, produced some of the finest salt in the world. From about 1670 until 1964, salt sustained the economy of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The island's salt raking past is immediately evident upon flying over the island or walking through town. The salt ponds of Salt Cay, or salinas, were formed by flushing the low-lying areas of the island with sea water. Windmills were used to power the small gates between the stone walls to allow the water to flow through the entire salinas network. As a result of the high evaporation rates and the naturally low levels of rainfall, the sun would leave deposits of salt in the pond beds. During the long days of the summer months, a hard white layer of crystallized salt still forms on the top of the mixture in the ponds, causing the ponds to sparkle like diamonds as the white salt deposits reflect the sun's rays. Many of the buildings from the salt raking industry still stand today and tours are available of the historical sites. Visitors to island enjoy the remote, relaxing atmosphere blended with a sense of the old world. Salt Cay is truly the land time forgot.
